There was a clear winner, Mike Woods

« Our national gravel championships got cancelled due to heat. On the surface, I see the humour of cancelling a race when it’s 32 outside, while two years ago, in true Canadian fashion, we raced this same race in 2 degree snow/rain & there were zero issues…

Seriously though, it was very warm on the course & on the second lap I was passing age groupers and a lot of them were off their bikes, sitting in the shade. After talking with the organization, it was clear that they put a lot of thought into their decision and judged it wasn’t safe for the majority out there.

On my side, I struggled on the early deciding climb, mostly I think because it was my first real hard effort since my crash. I felt better & better as the race continued, but not enough to compete for the win. Off the target, but I’m very glad my body seems to be healing well.

I know Cycling Canada can’t award a jersey, but I think for us, on the Elite men side, there was a clear winner. Congrats Mike Woods for your first unofficial maple leaf - looking forward to another battle this weekend at the OG Classique ! »
