Winnipeg is starting from far

« To Winnipeg's bike community: from a small acorn comes a magnificent and massive oak tree. The same way, Winnipeg's bright cycling future will come from a small but highly motivated cycling community.

Winnipeg is starting from far. I don't think I could say that I saw "cycling infrastructures" in Winnipeg. What I saw dont deserve to be call as such. Please add your own complaints in the comments if you're from Winnipeg.

Personally I saw:
-no plowing for cycling/pedestrians infrastructures (just beside perfectly plowed main arterial car roads: where are your priorities Winnipeg?);
-no connection, no continuity, no straight path for cyclists;
-"cycling paths" where you supposed to share the sidewalks with pedestrians and yield to them (are we a joke to you Winnipeg?)

But the worse offense I saw, and I said this with love for Winnipeg, the city deserves better: brand new asphalt with no improvements for cyclists or pedestrians. The average life span of a road is 30 years. When a city build an infrastructure it locks whatever design it has for 30 years! Is this how the city administration sees itself in 30 years: a car centric city? I don't see a better way for an administration to say: "we don't care about active transportation". Actions speak louder than words.

The present is grim. To create a cycling city presents a "chicken and egg dilemma" where you need cyclists to demands more cycling infrastructures, but to have more cycling infrastructures you need more cyclists. So where do you start? With a strong core of radical enthusiastic cyclists: pioneers. That's exactly what I saw yesterday: The seeds of a great cycling city. And I saw more than this, I saw friends. So to all of you: thanks for your support and great time and please let me know if you come by Quebec City. »
