How your body works in the heat and how we can adapt to it

by David Gagnon

« A few years back, Maghalie Rochette suffered a pretty bad heat stoke (abulance, hspital and much more). This episode made us really dig deeper into how your body works in the heat and how we can adapt to it.

It took years of slow progress for her body & mind to be confident training / racing in the heat. We tried many different strategies and slowly progressed. We’re at a point now where we see every super warm day as a great opportunity to practice and adapt the body to the heat.

From buying ice machines to cooling sprays, ice vest, buying a sauna for our house, etc. etc. we put a lot into making sure she didn’t pass out again in warm temps and she could regain the confidence and knowledge of how to go hard in hot temps.

Today’s 3.5h ride in over 110 degrees F temperature with 8x10 min at or above LT was a GREAT success and I’m so pumped and proud of her for trusting the process.

That 7 pound drop in my body weight today is from doing the same workout and drinking 1L per hour of Krono Nutrition (2 scoops in each bottle).

An easy place to start if you struggle with heat is to get yourself some super light clothes. These Grapha shirt you see in the pics are the Pro Team Flyweight jerseys and they are INSANELY cooler than a regular jersey! Love em.

- Bottom line is, if “You’re not a hot temp racer’’, there are ways to acclimate to it. You just have to be willing to work. »
