Last week I was diagnosed with mononucleosis after getting bloodwork done because I had been suffering from tonsillitis & otitis (both common mono symptoms). Turns out it was a little more than lack of fitness that was causing me to struggle on the bike recently.
Been catching up on some sleep and family time which is all my body was craving. Not sure when I will be back riding but the focus is on long-term health and a stronger comeback. It honestly feels validating to have a diagnosis and be able to identify why I was struggling in races so much.
Perspective, in my opinion, is something you can only get when you step away and have time to think. I’m taking this break off the bike as an opportunity for things I normally don’t have time to do in a « normal » season.
The thing is, when you’re used to being on a busy schedule and never being home for very long, you forget that slowing down isn’t so bad.
So I’m taking this mono diagnostic as a big reset button. Resetting goals for this season that aren’t results or even bike related, giving my body the rest it’s been telling me it needed, and slowly building a solid base of mental health & and it can only go up from there :)
