Life update

by Nickolas Zukowsky

« Coming into this season I was pretty excited and looking to put last year's difficulties behind me. Although after the first few days of racing, I already knew something wasn't quite right...

I was feeling mostly a lack of power on the bike at higher intensity and random intervals. In hindsight, I had experienced these symptoms in the past, especially in time trials, but would always find some way to explain in a stubborn way.

If it weren't for my one and only Simone Boilard, I would have probably kept on going for some time before getting any diagnosis of a problem. She had a feeling and in the end she was right.

I got the diagnosis for iliac artery endofibrosis in my right leg on February 20th. Even with the diagnosis, I took the decision with my team to try and race through the classics in support of my teammates. But as soon as I experienced more symptoms and went from being in the race to behind the ambulance, I knew it wasn't going to work out.

Obviously the timing is a big 0/10 but I wanted to get this fixed as soon as possible and hopefully still get the chance to finish the 2024 season on a better note.

Putting in long hours of training and spending the whole year away from family and friends to then barely hang on to the peloton in every race isn't what I'm striving for and I believe I'm capable of much more.

Currently hanging out in the hospital (NDLR : hôpital Lyon Sud) after a successful surgery and waiting for my brother to get his dusty Tucson bum over here so we can spend some time together while I get back on my feet.

I'll post a few updates along the way. Can't thank the people around me enough for the support and guidance. You know who you are. »
