Cycling rose from 8th to 6th
in sports participation in the U.S. last year

According to the National Sporting Goods Association, after falling 13% percent in 2006, cycling participation rebounded slightly from 35.6 million to 37.4 million riders in 2007.

Although cycling is down 9.1% overall from 5 years ago, ridership last year rose from 5.7% to 11.7% in the 18-24 age group. "If bicycling can be seen as cool by any generation I think it's a great thing," says Fred Clements, executive director of the U.S. National Bicycle Dealers Association. "I think coolness probably drives a lot of the decision making in that age group."

These statistics don't break down cycling by type (road, off-road, urban, etc.). In 2007, bike riding was behind exercise walking, exercising with equipment, swimming, camping and bowling (in that order) in total participants.
