Martin Gilbert et Dominique Perras
se joignent à la nouvelle équipe américaine
Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast
Montréal, le 13 décembre 2006 – Les cyclistes Dominique Perras et Martin Gilbert se joindront à la formation professionnelle américaine Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast pour la saison 2007. Cette nouvelle équipe sera dirigée par Jonas Carney, ancien directeur sportif chez Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada.
« J’ai passé trois belles années avec la formation Ofoto/Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada et la décision de quitter fut dure à prendre mais je ne pouvais laisser passer cette opportunité » explique Dominique.
« Martin et moi avons décidé de suivre Jonas Carney, notre ancien directeur sportif, avec qui nous entretenons une très bonne relation. Il est impliqué dans le cyclisme américain depuis 15 ans et possède une grande expérience de course. Je sais toute l’importance d’avoir un bon directeur sportif et je suis très enthousiaste de pouvoir courir pour Jonas l’an prochain avec l’excellent noyau de jeunes coureurs qu’il a mis sous contrat. Mes principaux objectifs seront le Tour de Georgie, le Tour de l’Utah, les Championnats canadiens, les Jeux Pan Américains et surtout le Tour de Beauce et Montréal-Boston. »
De son côté, Martin Gilbert pourra jumeler la piste et les courses sur route au sein de la formation Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast. Il se prépare pour les Coupes du Monde et Championnats du monde sur piste de janvier à mars. « Après les Coupes du monde et une éventuelle participation aux Championnats du monde, je me consacrerai à temps plein à l’équipe. Après avoir remporté ma première course professionnelle en 2006 lors d’un critérium (le Raleigh Twilight en Caroline du Nord) j’aimerais maintenant remporter une course sur route d’envergure aux USA » confie Martin. « Je suis aussi très content de poursuivre sur la scène américaine en compagnie de Dominique. »
L’équipe prendra part à la majorité des grandes courses américaines telles que le Tour de Georgie, la semaine de Philadelphie et le Tour de Utah, ainsi qu’à quelques épreuves en Amérique du Sud et en Europe en plus de quelques courses au Canada.
The Kelly Benefit Strategies pro cycling team, one of the newest pro teams on the national racing circuit, today announces finalization of the 2007 roster – including two marquee former pro national champions – and the name-changing addition of a co-title sponsor.
Maryland-based Medifast, the country’s leading manufacturer of clinically proven meal replacement programs, joins Kelly Benefit Strategies as co-title sponsor creating the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast Pro Cycling Team. The addition gives the team the financial backing of two of the leading companies in corporate and personal health and wellness today.
The team also announces the final 2007 roster, a lineup of seasoned sprinters, climbers and rising young talent. Athletes headlining the roster include Dave McCook of the United States and Canadian national Dominique Perras who joins the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast team along with former team-mate and fellow Quebec resident Martin Gilbert.
McCook, former USPRO Criterium Champion has dominated sprinting in the United States for the past fifteen years and brings guaranteed finishing expertise to the team. Perras, a former Canadian National Road Race Champion, has been a member of the Canadian national team since 1992, a professional since 1999 and a proven leader when it comes to climbing. He has participated in four UCI Pro World Championships.
“The addition of McCook and Perras has added road-tested strength, ability and experience to an already strong line up,” says Jonas Carney, Performance Director for the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast team. “If it comes to a bunch sprint or the need to lead in the mountains, we have guys who can definitely get that done and bring the younger riders with them. That’s crucial for a new team off the start line.”
The team has the full backing, support and involvement of Kelly Benefit Strategies and Medifast. Bicycle, equipment and other partnerships are all in the final stages of negotiation and will be announced ahead of the season start.
