« Coming from a busy weekend playing bikes in Charlevoix, you know what was really cool? (beside winning some and seeing some friends, camping and beautiful weather)

What was really cool was to witness some women taking their first race start in Charlevoix and doing really well!! THEY are the champions of the weekend!

My first time in Charlevoix in 2012, I barely finished the crit, with the lead car threatening to pull me out for 30min! At the TT, some "cool" girls from the cool teams made fun of my low-end road bike and lack of aero gear. "You’re going to do a TT like this?" It made me cry at night, but I knew I was just practicing for later.

Then in the road race it was a freezing pouring rain start, with nothing else than a jersey and summer gloves, I thought I’d die of hypothermia! I was in a small group behind the lead group when my tire flatted.

Without a repair kit, I didn’t know what to do I just waited. Racers of all categories and cars were passing while I just stayed there clueless what to do. No one ever stopped, until a local driving by saw me in a ball on the side of the road and took my back to the hotel and I left, without informing the commissaires!

That was quite the start to my cycling career.

I just know how much terrifying and intimidating it can be to sign up for your first race. It takes a lot more courage than it takes to attack a race 10 years later. So I think that you, first-timers at Charlevoix, are the admirable women that we should be applauding on the stage!! YES!! Well done!!! We all started somewhere.

This summer, if you haven’t register for some race/event, why don’t you give it a try! The first one is the hardest. Maybe bring a repair kit and some rain gear in case! »
