My experience with MRNA vaccine Pfyzer and periodization of training

« My anecdotal experience with MRNA vaccine Pfyzer and periodization of training (annual training plan).

disclaimer:this does not constitute medical advice, I do not play doctor on the internet! I am fully aware of the possible placebo and nocebo effects. this is not pro or anti vax and has no political affiliation.

I am an elite cyclist with high level cardiovascular fitness but not world class by any means. There is very little guidance as to how to incorporate covid vaccination into training plans as the technology is quite new. I truly believe in the efficacy of the vaccines to help our medical system weather the storm. I got my third dose two weeks ago and every dose for me drummed up the same conclusion. YOU WILL HAVE TO ADAPT TRAINING stress.

I am a someone who is extremely sensitive to changes in fitness, mindset, motivation and data derived from training.

I tried 3 strategies: vax at start of macrocycle, vax at end of macrocycle and vax during recovery week. All three had their challenges...

vax at start: motivation for training is high, freshness is high, I felt head fog but only needed to cut volume in week 2, but had to cut alot because I prolly dug a hole in week 1

vax at end: you are going in there already wrecked from training definitely felt nausea which made it hard to eat to deploy high training load of end of block

vax during recovery week: regular 4 day rest microcycle was not enough needed to extend to 7.

my main symptoms that had me pull back in training: head fog, definite overheating, super high sweat rate, low motivation, inability to raise hr quickly.

Also note, I do not have natural immunity as I have never had covid. Also note that this may not apply to someone training less than 10hours a week at baseline.

Hope this helps and doesn't turn into anything political or medical. »

« I can tell you that, compared to actually surviving Covid, ending up with major lung damage, and Long Covid, a little blip in your training cycle from vaccination is nothing to complain about.
22 months in, and I'm starting over, literally. I still have Long Covid symptoms that show up every time I push the envelope. Over the months, there's been slow improvement, and my lungs, although damaged, are at about 90% of what they were. It's patience and slow easy steps. (Track Cycling). I'm glad you got your jabs. You really don't want to experience the virus. Stay safe. »
