Canadian Harvey wins surprise cross-country bronze

Canadian Alex Harvey is wearing something no one at the World Cup men's 50-kilometre cross-country ski event in Norway on Saturday thought he would — a medal.

The 20-year-old from St-Ferreol-les-Neiges, Que., placed third in the event in Trondheim, with a time of two hours, two minutes, 13 seconds, just 33.2 seconds behind the winner, Sami Jauhojarvi of Finland.

It was Jauhojarvi's first World Cup victory but Harvey was the shocker of the race.

Competing in his first year on the Canadian senior team, Harvey has three junior championship medals under his belt and is also the son of legendary Canadian cross-country skier Pierre Harvey.

"It feels amazing," said Harvey. "I know I'm in really good shape and thought I could get into the top-15 today, but never thought a podium was possible. The longer distance races are usually won by the older guys so to do it at 20 years old is really amazing."
