I used to agonize over crafting New Year’s resolutions till I realized you could just tweak failed resolutions from previous years. It saves time and eventually produces goals you can achieve.
Here are my resolutions from the past 3 New Years:
Resolution 1: Bike Maintenance
2010: Clean bike after every ride, buy chain-measuring tool, patch all old inner tubes, set up bike-tuning station in garage
2011: Clean bike once a week, find chain-measuring tool, throw out old inner tubes, stop using repair stand to dry laundry
2012: Clean bike, look really hard for chain-measuring tool, move old inner tubes out of the way, find repair stand
Resolution 2: Road Behavior
2010: Obey all traffic laws, be courteous to fellow road users
2011: Put foot down at red lights if cars are present; don’t lose temper when explaining to motorists that texting, eyebrow-plucking and driving aren’t a great combo
2012: Avoid scaring pedestrians who are over age 70, give drivers the finger only when wearing mittens
Resolution 3: Group Rides
2010: Never miss a pull on the Saturday ride
2011: Do your fair share of work for as long as you can
2012: Hide in the pack the whole way and win the town-line sprint while screaming, “In your face, wankers!”
Resolution 4: Cycling Ambassador
2010: Be welcoming to new riders
2011: Be welcoming to new riders until they start going faster than you
2012: “Nice knee socks, pal”
Resolution 5: Weight Loss
2010: Lose weight gradually with a healthy diet
2011: Try not to gain weight
2012: Don’t tell anyone you now take XXL shorts
Resolution 6: Productive Worker
2010: I won’t visit cycling websites while at work
2011: I will only visit cycling websites while at work during the Tour de France
2012: I will try to get some work done while at work
