Remember the good old days when the only things distracting drivers were bad pop songs on the radio and a little spilled coffee in the lap? Now we have in-car DVD players, cell phones, PDAs, navigation units and even worse pop songs on the radio.
It all adds up to trouble for cyclists. Eighty percent of all crashes and 65% of near-crashes involve some type of distraction, according to a study done for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
